Experience the authentic desert blues of Samba Touré

thu, May 21st, 2026

In cooperation with Izvorišta, we are bringing one of the most respected contemporary representatives of "desert blues" to Zadar. Samba Touré is one of the most prominent contemporary Malian musicians, recognized as a key successor to the spirit and style of the legendary Ali Farka Touré. His music blends traditional North African desert blues with elements of rock, funk, and soul, creating a hypnotic and melancholic sound of the Niger River region. The concert is scheduled for tonight, May 21st, starting at 8 PM in the Versatile Hall of the Providur's Palace (Providurova palača).

He was born in Timbuktu (although he often cites Gao as the place where he grew up) and was raised in an atmosphere rich in Songhai and Peul traditions. His musical journey began under the influence of modern Western genres such as jazz, funk, and rock, which is reflected in his early works. A pivotal moment in his career was meeting and collaborating with Ali Farka Touré in the late 1990s. Samba became a member of Ali Farka Touré's band, where he spent years perfecting his signature guitar style, known as "Malian blues" or "desert blues." Although they were not related, Samba took on the role of a musical successor, dedicating himself to preserving and developing his mentor's sound.

Through his solo career, Samba Touré successfully blends the meditative, repetitive rhythms and hypnotic guitar lines of desert blues with lyrical reflections on social issues, war, and life in Mali.

His key albums include: Fondo (2010) - the album that established him on the international world music scene; Alba Dila (2013); Gandadiko (2015); Binga (2018); and Wande (2021) - albums with which he deepens his sound, focusing on acoustic and introspective songs while retaining funky elements.

Samba Touré has gained international acclaim by performing at major festivals around the world. Although deeply rooted in the music of the Niger River, his sound resonates with universal themes and attracts a global audience. His work represents a vital contribution to preserving Malian musical tradition, as well as evolving it within the context of the global music scene.
