Celebrating the Mediterranean

Vladimir & Kalafat in Zadar among 36 simultaneous music concerts Celebrating the Mediterranean

The National Foundation for the Development of Civil Society, with the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation and in partnership with the City of Zadar and the Zadar Concert Office, is celebrating the International Mediterranean Day on November 28, 2022, with the concert of Vladimir&Kalafat in the Bersa Brothers Concert Hall in the Duke's Palace in Zadar, starting at 19:00, with free entry.

Vladimir & Kalafat is a musical project of the Mostar artist Vladimir Mićković, who organizes historical and geographical journeys through the Mediterranean on his albums. An academic sculptor, painter and graphic artist, musician and singer with an extraordinarily suggestive voice, bordering on a soprano, he has been working for more than a decade as a researcher of musical experiences and traditions of the world from which he came. He sings Sevdalinka, Sephardic and Dalmatian songs. Gabrijel Prusina, pianist, arranger, composer, producer and sound engineer, longtime member of the cult Bosnian band Mostar Sevdah Reunion, performs with him in a duet.

Criticism declared Vladimir Mićković's music to be an extension of the "Mediterranean : A Cultural Landscape" of Mostar's literary great Predrag Matvejević. It is about the meeting of Dalmatia with the East, through the prism of a personal approach to Mediterranean culture and heritage, which, apart from geographical impressions, depicts even more the emotional states of travelers and refugees, with inevitable parallels with today's Mediterranean fugitives who go from the opposite direction, from the coasts of Africa to Europe, which unfortunately too often end tragically.

At the same time as the concert in Zadar, 35 free music concerts will begin in 24 Euro-Mediterranean countries, which will present the diversity of the Mediterranean within the framework of their local communities and, by digitally connecting, present themselves internationally through artistic expression, which will achieve the ultimate goal of promoting the importance of conversation. between cultures and the importance of respecting diversity.

In addition to Croatia, the other countries included are: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Morocco, the Netherlands, Palestine, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey.

International Mediterranean Day is celebrated on November 28 every year and represents an opportunity to promote exchange between cultures, cooperation, appreciation of diversity and strengthening of ties between the two shores of the Mediterranean. This year, the Anna Lindh Foundation announced a public call for participation in the Celebrating the Mediterranean program, which aims to celebrate common identity, origin and love for the Mediterranean through the organization of free music concerts that will start at the same time in the Euro-Mediterranean area and will serve as a reminder that our similarities can outweigh our differences. Celebrating the Mediterranean received 96 applications from 29 countries, and ultimately 36 musical proposals from a total of 25 countries from the Euro-Mediterranean area were selected.

This musical initiative was organized together with the digital campaign "Mediterranean, a path through the senses", whose goal is to raise awareness that the Mediterranean is much more than aromatic spices, sea breezes and colorful cities. The Mediterranean is a multifaceted term that fosters inclusiveness, cooperation and represents something different to everyone, and at the same time all this diversity is part of our common Mediterranean identity.

The Anna Lindh Foundation was founded in 2004 at the initiative of the President of the European Commission, Roman Prodi, as the first joint institution between the EU and the Mediterranean partner states, whose goal is to initiate a dialogue between cultures and remove the risks of possible conflicts that reached their peak at the beginning of the 21st century. The foundation got its name from the assassinated Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anna Lindh.

The Anna Lindh Foundation carries out its activities in three areas:

1. By creating alternative narratives that fight against extremist discourses and radicalization

2. By creating inclusive and empathetic societies in order to achieve trust and tolerance

3. By creating a culture based on dialogue and exchange.
